What Is the Bronze Health Plan in Health Insurance?

<lingo>When choosing health insurance from the Health Insurance Marketplace, consumers can purchase one of four categories of plans. The Bronze health plan is one of those options. By comparison to other categories, the health insurance policies that fit into this plan are typically going to have the lowest monthly premium costs. However, they typically cost more when you obtain care due to coinsurance and deductibles. For some people, this type of plan may be the ideal choice and should be compared against others to find the best possible coverage.</lingo>

Bronze Health Plan Clearly and Briefly Explained

The Health Insurance Marketplace has four categories of insurance plans, often called “metal levels” due to their names. The Bronze plan is a popular option for men and women who typically want to pay less from month to month and pay more if there is a medical need. For example, most of the health insurance plans that fall under this category will have a high deductible. This means you will pay more out-of-pocket with this care than you would others. Once you reach the deductible level, the insurance kicks in to cover more of the medical needs you have in that year.

High deductible policies can be expensive if a person has a lot of medical needs. For example, if you take prescription medications, visit the doctor often, play a high risk sport, or otherwise need medical care on a routine basis, this may not be ideal because the plan does not begin to pay for those costs until you reach a very high level.

However, like all health insurance plans sold on the Health Insurance Marketplace, it does come with some types of coverage built in. For example, all of the required essentials of coverage, such as up to three primary care visits per year, are included in this coverage. Any free preventative service required by the Marketplace will be a part of your coverage here. Policies differ, which means consumers need to carefully consider all of their options before making a purchase decision about this plan.
